Description

This map shows hospitals, symbolized by their overall quality rating (1 to 5 stars, with 5 being the highest and 3 being the most common).  Data is from Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services' Hospital Compare data site.  The overall summary table (used in this map) is available as a feature layer.  The map is multi-scale, symbology changes slightly when zoomed in to counties-scale (1:1,150,000).

The overall rating is a 1 to 5 star score that summarizes 57 different quality measures, with 5 being the highest and 3 being the most common.  These measures span seven categories: mortality, safety of care, readmission, patient experience, effectiveness of care, timeliness of care, and efficient use of medical imaging.  These 57 quality measures only reflect common conditions that hospitals treat, such as heart attacks and pneumonia, so as to be comparable.  A hospital’s performance on more rare or complicated procedures is not reflected in the Hospital Compare measures.

Only hospitals that have at least three measures within at least three measure groups or categories, including one outcome group (mortality, safety, or readmission), are eligible for an overall rating. Not all hospitals report all measures. Therefore, some hospitals may not be eligible for an overall rating, and are not displayed in this map.
