Description

This web map, utilizing data from the Energy Information Administration (EIA), depicts all operable electric generating plants by energy source in the U.S. This includes plants that are operating, on standby, or short- or long-term out of service. The data covers all plants with a combined nameplate capacity of 1 MW (Megawatt) or more.

In 2016, most U.S. electricity was generated using fossil fuels. The largest energy source in the U.S. generating 4 trillion kilowatt hours of electricity was natural gas. Natural gas was the source of about 34% of electricity generation. The second largest energy source for electricity generation was coal with 30% of all power generation. Petroleum can be burned to produce electricity generation, but this source is not a large source in power generation with less than 1% of U.S. electricity generation. Nuclear power provided the U.S. with 1/5th of total U.S. electricity or about 20% of all U.S. electricity generation. Renewable energy sources provided 15% of total U.S. electricity in 2016. Hydropower generated 7% of total U.S. electricity generation and about 44% of electricity generation from renewable energy. Electricity generation from wind has increased significantly in the United States since 1970. In 2016, wind power provided almost 6% of U.S. electricity generation and about 37% of electricity generation from renewable energy.

Biomass is a material derived from plants or animals and includes lumber, paper mill wastes, food scraps, grass, leaves and paper. Biomass can also include forestry and agricultural residues such as wood chips, corn cobs and wheat straw. However, biomass has only accounted for 2% of the total U.S. electricity generation in 2016. Solar power produces energy from the sun and in 2016, generated about 1% of U.S. electricity generation. Geothermal power comes from heat energy beneath the surface of the earth. However, here again geothermal power generation was less than 1% of total U.S. electricity generation in 2016.

Jeffrey, I would like to include an immersive link to this map as a great example of symbology. Would you email me at adavisholland@gmail.com to let me know if that is okay?

This tile layer will automatically create tiles as needed and cache them for future use. No further configuration is required. View the Settings tab to change the default options. Build tiles manually for specific scales and extents to improve display performance for the first person to view the tile layer at that scale and extent. Tiles must exist if the layer will be used offline.
