Description:
Abstract: This polygon GIS data set represents a compilation of statewide seagrass data from various source agencies and scales. The data were mapped from sources ranging in date from 1987 to 2021. This dataset is complete as of data available to FWRI in July 2022. Not all data in this compilation are mapped from photography; some are the results of field measurements. See the "Sources" section for more information. The original source data sets were not all classified in the same manner; some used the Florida Land Use Cover and Forms Classification System (FLUCCS) codes 9113 for discontinuous seagrass and 9116 for continuous seagrass; some defined only presence and absence of seagrass, and some defined varying degrees of seagrass percent cover. In order to merge all of these data sources into one compilation data set, FWRI reclassified the various source data attribute schemes into two categories: "Continuous Seagrass" and "Patchy (Discontinuous) Seagrass". In areas where studies overlap, the most recent study where a given area has been interpreted is represented in this data set. This data set is not comparable to previous statewide data sets for time series studies - not all areas have been updated since the previous statewide compilation and some areas previously not mapped are now included. Please contact GIS Librarian to request the source data if you need to do a time series comparison. This data set has been updated in several areas from the previous compilation, including Naples Bay (2007), Choctawhatchee Bay (2007) and the Florida Panhandle (2010), Florida Bay (2016), portions of the Caloosahatchee, Loxahatchee, and St. Lucie Rivers (2011), Lake Worth Lagoon (2018), Rookery Bay (2014), Estero Bay and the West Coast (2014), Indian River Lagoon (2021), the Springs Coast (2020) and Southwest Florida (2020). Version 2 of the Unified Florida Reef Tract Map, with seagrass data ranging in source date from 2004-2015, has also been integrated into this compilation to represent the most recent data available from St. Lucie County to the Dry Tortugas in Florida Keys.
Purpose: This GIS data set was developed to represent the most recent seagrass mapping available in Florida for current statewide display and analysis. Not all areas have been mapped. This data set includes areas that were not previously mapped in other statewide compilations. This data set is not appropriate for time series comparisons to previous statewide compilations.
Supplemental Information: Prior to July 1, 2004, the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI) was known as the Florida Marine Research Institute (FMRI). The institute name has not been changed in historical data sets or references to work completed by the Florida Marine Research Institute. The institute name has been changed in references to ongoing research, new research, and contact information. These data are for statewide mapping and analysis only. The original regional data sets may contain more detailed seagrass attribution schemes. Contact GIS Librarian to request the source data sets.

Attribute Accuracy Report: Attributes are accurate as reclassification of source data. See "Source Information" and "Process Step" sections for methods of reclassification.
Logical Consistency Report: These data appear logically consistent. Geodatabase topology was run to detect overlapping polygons - none are present. Polygons with area less than 1 square meter were removed. Some slivers may be present.
Completeness Report: These data are complete as of data available to FWRI in July 2022. The study areas for the source data varied. With the exception of the Springs Coast mapped in 2020, offshore data have not been mapped to any consistent distance or depth statewide. Broward and Collier counties are included; however, these counties were mapped using field measurements, rather than complete aerial photography, so additional unmapped seagrass may still be present within these counties. For Lake Worth Lagoon in Palm Beach County, the 2018 polygons must be interpreted as a ground-truthing verification of the previous 2013 mapping effort with limited updates to include some new areas of seagrass cover in the north and south segments and loss of seagrass habitat from development projects in the lagoon since 2013. The 2013 ground-truthing survey was based on aerial-delineated seagrass habitat in 2007 and may have excluded areas of seagrass expansion since 2007 as well as areas that were incorrectly classified due to limited groundtruthing. Additionally, aerial photography interpretation is subject to error due to variability in seagrass species signatures and densities, particularly the diminutive Halophilaspp., and variable water clarity conditions in Lake Worth Lagoon among the three segments. Aerial photography methods also do not capture low density of Halophila spp., the dominant habitat type throughout most of the lagoon. Additional data gaps may be present. Contact GIS Librarian to request extent of mapping.

Source Contribution: The Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve (RBNERR) received a grant for a three-year project to help local communities manage freshwater flows in the Rookery Bay Estuary. In an effort to understand changes to the Rookery Bay estuary, Scheda Ecological Associates, Inc. (Scheda) scientists performed a literature review and an analysis of available historic aerial imagery to assess the potential of documenting changes in estuarine habitats over time. Benthic features were interpreted from natural color aerial photography flown in December 2014. Photo-interpretation was conducted using heads up (interpreting imagery on a computer screen) photogrammetric techniques and digital photogrammetric workstations were utilized for direct capture of digital data in an ArcGIS geo-database. Features were classified using modified codes from the Florida Land Use Land Cover Classification System (FLUCCS). Source Contribution: This GIS data set is the only data available for the most of area. In the small area of overlap with benthic_palmbeach_2007, the Palm Beach County data were used. No seagrass density attributes were recorded, so all polygons were classified as "Patchy (Discontinuous) Seagrass" by default. This information is not intended to provide an exhaustive coverage of seagrass in Broward County. Additional areas of seagrass are believed to exist, but have not yet been verified by staff. Source Citation Abbreviation: All 2018 Adjusted Seagrass Polygons for Lake Worth Lagoon
Source Contribution: This dataset is the most recent available for Lake Worth Lagoon. The survey upon which the data is based was limited to those locations where seagrass was mapped in 2013 and may have excluded some areas of seagrass expansion. As such, the 2018 polygons must be interpreted as a ground-truthing verification of the 2013 map with limited updates to include some new areas of seagrass cover in the north and south segments and loss of seagrass habitat from development projects in the lagoon since 2013. Where overlap with seagrass_Indian_River_Lagoon_2019 occurs, the more recent data were used. The data was originally classified based on a combination of a qualitative index description of seagrass density and average Braun-Blanquet (BB) scores of 0 to 5. In addition, the 2018 source data includes polygons representing both unvegetated potential seagrass habitat as well as polygons described as "Zone of Seagrass Occurrence." FWRI removed these potential habitat and "zone of seagrass occurrence" polygons befoe reclassifying the remaining seagrass polygons using the qualitative description as follows: "Emergent low density/patchy seagrass habitat" and "Low density/patchy seagrass habitat" polygons were reclassified as “Patchy (Discontinuous) Seagrass”; "Moderate to high density seagrass habitat" polygons were reclassified as “Continuous Seagrass”. Process Description:
FWRI staff added four attributes to each data set: SEAGRASS - indicates "continuous" or "discontinuous". If a seagrass data set only indicated presence/absence this attribute defaulted to discontinuous. SOURCEDATE - year(s) of photography. Also indicates if date is unknown or if the polygon was not interpreted from photography. METADATA - the information in this field will be populated with a link to the metadata for the source data set that the polygon came from once the source metadata is online. Currently it is the source data set name used as a placeholder. DESCRIPT - standardized name field for labeling maps. Values include "Continuous Seagrass", or "Discontinuous Seagrass". Staff used the most recent information for an area. Staff determined the most recent information by creating footprints of all source polygons, minus any large land polygons and uninterpreted areas. Staff used these footprints with the ArcGIS Toolbox command "erase" to eliminate areas of overlap from older source data sets. In some areas the exclusion of shoreline resulted in sliver polygons due to different studies using different shorelines. Staff manually deleted these slivers after the "erase", defaulting to the more recent shoreline coverage. Once all the data were properly "erased", staff loaded all of the data into a single geodatabase feature class. Running a topology resulted in no overlaps. If an area was uninterpreted within a more recent study, but interpreted in an older study, then the older study was used. Sliver polygons less than one square meter were deleted. Any additional slivers are either due to preserving the "Source" attribute or they were present in the original source data sets.
